KAUKAUNA — Although the pandemic dominated headlines around the nation in 2021, there were many other stories that captured the attention of Kaukauna Community News readers.

We celebrated state championships from our high school sports teams, and mourned those tragically lost too soon.

10. Aug. 9: Masks optional for students and staff when they return in the fall

UPDATE: The district has recorded 415 COVID-19 cases among students so far this school year, and 74 among staff.

9. Oct. 15: Proceeds of 50-50 football game raffle donated to Combined Locks crash victims.

UPDATE: People have donated roughly $90,000 on GoFundMe to help with funeral and other expenses.

8. June 30: Kaukuana wins state softball championship.

UPDATE: The state softball title follows a state title won by the wrestling team in February.

7. April 5: Two arrested in connection with killing of man in Kaukauna

UPDATE: Two suspects are awaiting trail.

6. June 29: Authorities release photos of two connected to camper theft

UPDATE: The suspects have not been identified

5. July 30: Founder of popular GhostTown Pictures Facebook group dies

The Facebook group remains active, moderated by volunteers.

4. Dec. 14: Former Darboy Club building demolished

UPDATE: The new owners are clearing the property for future redevelopment.

3. Aug. 23: Movie crew filming in downtown Kaukauna

UPDATE: Filming wrapped up at the end of September. A release date has not been announced.

2. Dec. 16: Kaukauna track coach killed in crash

UPDATE: A memorial gathering for Steve Buss is scheduled for Dec. 30.

1. Nov. 13: Rico of popular Rico’s family restaurant passes away

UPDATE: A former employee has reportedly purchased the restaurant and has reopened it as Mama D’s Cafe.
