GREEN BAY — Green Bay Police are urging motorists to use the designated detours to cross the Fox River while the Mason Street bridge remains out of service.
The bridge suffered a mechanical failure Tuesday and the Wisconsin Department of Transportation does not yet have an estimate of when it will reopen.
The bridge was raised Tuesday about 6 p.m. to let a tug go through, and has remained stuck in the vertical position ever since.
Police are asking drivers to use I-43 or Wisconsin Highway 172 which can better accommodate a higher volume of vehicles than Walnut Street or Dousman St/Main St.
Chief Jim Runge has temporarily designated Ashland Av between W Mason St and Walnut St as a “heavy traffic route.”
Police say they have department employees monitoring the traffic flow in the areas near the bridges, especially during typical high traffic times, and will do manual light operation to improve traffic flow.
