KAUKAUNA — Students in Kaukauna are getting ready to head back to school, but for many, a familiar and beloved crossing guard won’t be at her post.
Vicki Wagner was killed in a tragic motor-vehicle accident over the summer in Appleton, and as school is set to begin, the Kaukauna Police Department is recognizing her.
In a social media post Wednesday, the department wrote about her positive impact in the community and those she served.
“With school around the corner, we are reminded of Vicki’s many years of dedicated service protecting our children on their walks to and from school,” read the post. “Whether it was ensuring our children’s safe passage, or a simple smiling face to start the day, Vicki could always be counted on. We will never forget Vicki’s kindness and will forever hold her memory in our hearts.”
Wagner died June 18 in Appleton when a dump truck being towed by a wrecker rolled over onto Wagner’s vehicle, killing her.
Many families spoke out after the accident, calling Wagner, “one of the kindest, most genuine souls a person could ever meet, and she made an ordinary part of one family’s day feel so special.”
At the time, her niece, Amy Hintz, said Wagner worked at the corner at Park Community Charter School for three years, then this last year was at Dr. H. B. Tanner Early Learning Center.
“She truly loved her job,” Hintz said. “She loved talking to the kids and families.”
