APPLETON – One person died Thursday in a crash involving a vehicle and a heavy-duty wrecker towing a loaded dump truck carrying sand.
According to an Appleton Police Department news release, the heavy-duty tow truck was exiting northbound WI 441 onto E. Calumet Street via the off-ramp about noon today. The wrecker left the roadway and entered the median, causing the dump truck it was towing to become detached. The dump truck then rolled over and collided with a vehicle that was stopped in westbound traffic on E. Calumet Street.
First responders attempted to render aid to the driver of the vehicle that was struck by the dump truck; however, the driver succumbed to their injuries at the scene.
A joint investigation is underway and is being conducted by members from the Appleton Police Department, Wisconsin State Patrol Inspectors, and the Wisconsin State Patrol Accident Reconstruction Unit.
Responders from the Appleton Police Department, Appleton Fire Department, Outagamie County Sheriff, Wisconsin State Patrol, and Gold Cross Ambulance assisted at the scene.
E. Calumet Street remains closed between WI 441 and Stoney Brook Drive. Additionally, the northbound Calumet Street exit from northbound WI 441 will remain closed for traffic exiting for eastbound E. Calumet Street as the investigation continues. Motorists are encouraged to use alternative routes when traveling in the area, plan ahead, and follow posted detours.
