OSHKOSH — Police are warning the community about the dangers of walking on the ice after a man broke through and fell into icy water Tuesday while trying to cross the Fox River in Oshkosh.

The Winnebago County 911 Comm Center was notified shortly after 8 p.m. Tuesday of a person who was cold and wet after they had fallen through the ice on the Fox River near Ohio Street in the City of Oshkosh.

According to a news release, the 23-year-old man was attempting to walk across the river when he broke though the ice into the river.

The man was able to get himself out of the water and on to shore safely, where he called 911 himself for assistance.

Another passerby also called 911 to report this same man that looked like he needed assistance in this area as well.

The man was assisted by law enforcement and first responders; thankfully, he was uninjured.

Police are warning people that no ice is 100% safe. This is particularly true in areas with a current, such as the Fox River.

They are also aware that some items belonging to the man remain on the ice in this area.
