APPLETON — A bullet accidentally fired into a neighboring apartment missed an infant, young child and two others Sunday morning in Appleton. The shooter is now facing charges after not going to check on the neighbors after the incident, police say.
According to a news release, Appleton Police Department officers were sent Sunday morning to an apartment after the residents reported that a bullet had been fired into their home.
Responding officers quickly determined the round had been fired from an adjoining residence and had penetrated a shared interior wall.
Investigators say someone in the neighboring apartment had been demonstrating basic firearm handling to two others in preparation for a planned trip to a shooting range.
While showing the weapon, and mistakenly believing the firearm had been unloaded, one of the people pointed the gun toward an interior wall and fired a live round.
Four people, including a young child and an infant, were inside the neighboring apartment when the bullet passed through.
Police say no one was struck or injured, but the the people in the unit from which the round was fired made no attempt to check on the safety or well-being of their neighbors following the incident.
Based on the findings of the investigation, the person responsible for the negligent discharge is being referred to the Outagamie County District Attorney’s Office for one count of Endangering Safety by Use of a Dangerous Weapon.
