MADISON — For the fifth year in a row, the Kaukauna Galloping Ghosts softball team is back in the state semifinal game.
Second-seeded Kaukauna defeated 7-seed Sun Prairie East 9-1 Wednesday morning at Goodman Diamond on the UW-Madison campus.
The Ghosts were holding on to a slim 2-1 lead until the fifth inning when Kaukauna broke the game open with a 7-run fifth inning capped off by a Carly Meredith grand slam to push the score to 9-1.
Kaukauna will face either #3 Hamilton (25-3) or #6 Oregon (23-3) at 7 p.m. Thursday with the winner advancing to Saturday’s championship game.
The Ghosts’ last loss was to Milton in last year’s state semifinal game. The team was on a 108-game winning streak until that loss.
This is Kaukauna’s seventh trip to state overall and for the fifth year in a row. They captured the gold trophy five times, including 2010, 2017, 2021, 2022 and 2023.
