KAUKAUNA — A girls wrestling team is about to join Kaukauna’s storied high school program.
The Kaukauna Area School District Board of Education on Monday is expected to vote on authorizing a coach for a high school girls wrestling program.
According to a staff memo, Kaukauna already has girls wrestling at the middle school level and they anticipate a minimum of 6-10 girls participating in the first year of the program at the high school.
The Fox Valley Association has good numbers, and girls wrestling is the fastest growing girls sport in the WIAA with more than 150 schools with girls teams, according to the district.
The head coach of the girls team would be responsible for the development, leadership and organization of the program.
The cost for the position is $5,197.
Wisconsin’s WIAA officially sanctioned girls wrestling as a championship sport in June 2020. The historic first-ever individual WIAA Girls State Wrestling Championship tournament was subsequently held on January 29, 2022, at the La Crosse Center.
Kaukauna is no stranger to wrestling championships.
The Ghosts boys team has won a total of ten Division 1 state championships overall, including four straight from 2014-’17 and the current streak of six in a row, with the most recent title coming in March.
The Kaukauna Area School District Board of Education meeting will be held at 6 p.m., Monday, July 27 in the meeting room, 1701 County Road CE.
