KAUKAUNA — The heavy rains of last April claimed another victim, the sump pump at the Grignon Mansion.

Fortunately, the problem was quickly discovered, and salvage and restoration crews were at the home the same day.

No artifacts or items of historical interest were damaged according to Mary Grogan-Seleen, president of the Friends of the Grignon Mansion.

“Restoration work is ongoing,” says Grogan-Seleen, “but it takes time to get it right. And we want to do what’s best for the Mansion. So, with much reluctance, we will be postponing the opening of the summer tour season.”

The Friends will still host the American Legion Flag Day MIA/POW ceremony scheduled for June 13 and Little Chute Community Band Concert and Ice Cream Social on June 17, as planned on the lawn, but the Mansion will not be open for tours.

“We’re hoping to open in July,” Grogan-Seleen said, “With a re-opening to coincide with the opening of the Bicentennial Time Capsule on July 26.

The capsule was buried in the front lawn of the Mansion in 1976.

Plans call for opening the capsule that day and to re-bury it with memorabilia from 2026, to be opened in the Tri-centennial year of 2076.
