APPLETON – A resident and a cat escaped an Appleton house fire early Tuesday, but two dogs and two cats died in the fire.

According to the Appleton Fire Department, firefighters were sent out about 8:30 a.m. to a structure fire in the 900 block of North Richmond Street in Appleton.

The initial call indicated smoke and flames were visible from a bedroom.

When emergency crews arrived, fire companies noticed heavy smoke coming from the home.

A search of the home was made to ensure everyone evacuated safely. Companies ventilated the building, and the fire was under control within 10 minutes, according to a news release from the Appleton Fire Department.

Firefighters are working to determine a cause, however, properly working smoke alarms were not sounding upon arrival, according to the fire department.

Damage to the building and contents is estimated to be $70,000. The Appleton Fire Department was assisted by Appleton Police Department and Gold Cross Ambulance.

One resident was home at the time of the fire. No injuries have been reported. Two dogs and two cats perished as a result of the fire, and one cat survived.
