MADISON — The debate on what to do with an unexpected state surplus heated up significantly Thursday when Gov. Tony Evers unveiled a plan that would send $150 checks to every Wisconsin resident.

Evers’ plan also would bolster funding for K-12 schools and help defray child care costs, according to the Associated Press.

On Wednesday, state number crunchers said budget projections grew by $2.9 billion more than expected just six months ago.

Evers’ plan would spend $1.7 billion of that surplus.

His plan, however far from a sure thing.

The Republican leaders, who control the legislature, have said they want to use the money for a tax cut in 2023.

Utlimately, any plan would have to have support from both the governor and legislature.
