Mama D's Cafe in Freedom

FREEDOM — The popular Rico’s restaurant in Freedom closed earlier this month after the unexpected death of owner Rico Carrasco, but the doors weren’t closed for long.

Longtime waitress Donna Wall and her husband, Dick, have reopened the popular eatery in Freedom as Mama D’s Cafe.

The cafe opened Sunday, the day after Christmas, after Rico’s announced its closure Dec. 19.

Paid Partnership

“Hope to see you all. The staff is excited and ready to see you!” read a post on the restaurant’s new Facebook page, Mama D’s Cafe LLC.

Much of the staff of Rico’s has stayed on, according to Donna’s daughter, Danielle.

The restaurant currently is cash only, but should be accepting card payments later this week.

The restaurant is open Monday-Friday 5:30 a.m.-8 p.m. and Saturday-Sunday 7 a.m.-2 p.m.

Rico’s owner Efrain “Rico” Carrasco, passed away overnight on Nov. 12, 2021.

Rico’s had grown to multiple locations at one point, including the one on Wisconsin Avenue in Kaukauna that opened in February of 2018. That location closed in February 2020.
