KAUKAUNA — Abram Johnson, currently a 5th grade student at River View Middle School, recently donated money to Park Community Charter School to help them purchase a “Safe Place” bench for the school playground area.

Last Spring, Johnson asked friends coming to his birthday party to contribute toward a gift to Park Community Charter School rather than bring gifts. With his idea, Johnson raised $410 and was excited to help fund the purchase of a “Safe Place” bench.

The Safe Place is a structure is part of Park Community’s behavior management program, Conscious Discipline. This brain-based program teaches students skills of self-regulation and builds a strong sense of family at school. A “Safe Place” is a place where students are able to go to change their inner state from upset to composed in order to optimize learning; it’s the centerpiece of the self-regulation program.
