APPLETON — Police responded to a report of an apartment intruder recently, but the suspect turned out to be quite unexpected.
Police say a deer crashed into the first floor apartment, then finally crashed back out another window to freedom after authorities arrived.
Appleton police shared the “wild” video Sunday of the intrusion, reminding residents that this is the time of year that deer typically are on the move.
The body cam video shows an officer approaching the apartment from the outside.
The officer looks inside a window, then says, “Oh yep, I see it. Hey bud,” before a crash is heard.
The officer then moves around to the other side of the building, tells another officer that, “no, it’s just the one,” when the deer jumps back out the window and runs away apparently uninjured.
No one was home at the time, but officers later contacted the landlord and resident, who were able to address the broken windows and ensure there were no other issues inside the apartment.
While a deer entering an apartment is certainly unusual, increased deer movement this time of year is not. Wisconsin DNR identifies October and November as the months when most deer-vehicle collisions occur, as deer become more active during the fall breeding season. Deer are also most active around dawn and dusk.
