MONROE — Two people died Monday in a plane crash near the Monroe Municipal Airport, according to the Green County Sheriff’s Office.

Green County is located in south-central Wisconsin along the border with Illinois.

According to a news release, the Sheriff’s Office 911 Communications Center received a call at 5:14 p.m. reporting an aircraft crash at a gravel quarry on the north side of Wisconsin Highway 59, next to the airport.

A deputy arrived on the scene and reported a large fire involving construction equipment and a debris field from the aircraft.

Monroe Rural Fire Department, Juda Fire Department, and Green County EMS responded, and the fire was extinguished. Emergency personnel located two deceased individuals, whose identities are currently unknown.

The National Transportation Safety Board and the Federal Aviation Administration are en route to investigate the crash. The Sheriff’s Office remains involved in the investigation and is maintaining scene security. No further information is available at this time.
