KAUKAUNA — A Kaukauna River View Middle School student is recovering after being struck and dragged by a car on the first day of school.

The accident happened Tuesday afternoon about 3:30 p.m. behind the Kwik Trip on Catherine Street.

According to the girl’s mother, Alexandria Banick, her daughter Skylynn and her brother were on their way home after school.

Skylynn was using an electric scooter at the time, according to a police news release.

Banick said that from her daughter and son’s account, Skylynn stopped, made eye contact with the driver, thinking she was stopped and letting her go.

That’s when Skylynn proceeded to cross the Kwik Trip driveway when she says the driver hit her.

Skylynn told her mother she was under the car holding on for dear life as her brother watched the accident unfold.

Skylynn says she was dragged down the hill almost to the mural wall — over 60 feet.

She says the driver didn’t stop until a bunch of people flagged her down and some men picked up the car to get her out from under it.

Skylynn spent the night in the pediatric unit, and friends have started a GoFundMe HERE to help the family with uncovered expenses related to the accident.

Banick says Skylynn’s backpack saved her life.

The accident comes nearly a decade after a River View student was struck and killed on the way home from school.

Justin Johnson, a 12-year-old seventh grader died Tuesday, Sept. 6, 2016 after being struck by a school bus in downtown Kaukauna.
