APPLETON — Although it may be partly cloudy at times overnight, a partial lunar eclipse could peek through over the Fox Valley.
According to the Barlow Planetarium in Menasha, the eclipse will be visible on the night of Aug. 27 into the early morning of Aug. 28.
During the eclipse, the moon will pass through Earth’s shadow, causing up to 96% of its surface to appear red. The eclipse is safe to watch with your eyes, so no special equipment is needed. A telescope or binoculars can make the view even more impressive.
Timeline of Events:
August 27
- 8:24 pm – Penumbral eclipse beings
- 9:35 pm – Partial (umbral) eclipse begins
- 11:13 pm – Maximum eclipse at 96% (this will be the most exciting part!)
August 28
- 12:52 am – Partial eclipse ends
- 2:01 am – the penumbral eclipse ends
