APPLETON – The man who died last Wednesday in a residential fire is a former Appleton police lieutenant, the Outagamie County Coroner’s Office and Appleton Police Department said Monday.

The fire victim, Ronnie McIntire, is being remembered for his 36 years as an Appleton police officer, retiring in 1999.

According to a news release, the Appleton Fire Department was called about 5:20 p.m., Feb. 18, to a structure fire in the 3000 block of North Meade Street in Appleton.

The investigation revealed that McIntire, 86, made the 911 call reporting a fire in the kitchen area.

When fire companies arrived, they confirmed smoke coming from the roof and search and rescue efforts began. McIntire was removed from the home, treated on scene and was transferred to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.

McIntire holds a special place in the heart of the Appleton Police Department. After serving in the United States Marine Corps, he served 36 years as an Appleton police officer, retiring in 1999 as a Lieutenant. After retirement, he continued to serve the community as a school crossing guard up until his passing.

“We extend our deepest condolences to the family and friends of Ronnie McIntire during this difficult time. Our thoughts are with them as we continue to investigate the cause of this tragic incident,” read a social media post from the department.
