Full statement from Superintendent Mike Slowinski:
The Kaukauna Area School District has made the difficult decision to discontinue gymnastics as a school-sponsored program at Kaukauna High School beginning with the 2026–27 school year.
This decision is based on a multi-year analysis of the program’s long-term sustainability. Over time, participation has remained consistently low and has continued to decline. Projected participation indicates that this trend will continue. Concluding the program after this season allows the district to minimize the impact on current and future students while responsibly planning for the years ahead.
In addition to participation trends, the program requires a significant commitment of facilities and travel resources. With a very limited number of schools in our region continuing to offer gymnastics, competitions involve extensive travel, and the specialized equipment setup limits broader access to the high school’s shared spaces for extended periods of time. These factors limit the district’s ability to allocate resources and facilities in a way that maximizes opportunities for student participation in extracurricular activities.
While it is difficult to discontinue any program that serves students, the district must carefully evaluate how programs align with student participation, facility use, and responsible stewardship of resources. We are grateful to the student-athletes, families, and coaches who have contributed to the gymnastics program over the years, and the Kaukauna Area School District remains committed to providing a wide range of options that support student involvement and engagement across our extracurricular offerings.
