KAUKAUNA — A family and their pet cat are displaced after a fire in a basement clothes dryer filled the home with smoke.
According to a news release, the Kaukauna Fire Department responded about 1 p.m. Wednesday to 520 Diedrich St. for a report of black smoke throughout the home.
The residents had returned home to discover it filled with smoke but were unable to locate the source.
When firefighters arrived, they found smoke coming from the home from the open front entry door, though no flames were visible from the outside.
Firefighters began an interior fire attack and discovered a clothes dryer on fire in the basement along with surrounding contents. The fire was quickly extinguished and crews performed overhaul of the affected area.
A family cat remained inside the home when firefighters arrived, but was safely recovered after the fire was extinguished. The cat was reunited with its owners.
Fire damage was contained to the clothes dryer and the immediate area surrounding it, however extensive smoke damage affected the entire home. Initial damage estimates are approximately $15,000.
The cause of the fire is currently under investigation by the Kaukauna Fire Department.
