WHITEWATER — Firefighters discovered one person dead inside a home after a fire Thursday afternoon in Whitewater.

According to a news release, Whitewater Fire and EMS responded about 12:30 p.m. Thursday to a report of smoke in a building on the city’s southwest side.

When they arrived about 4 minutes after being called, firefighters found an odor of smoke about the property and heavily soot-stained windows.

When firefighters made it inside the home, they found an area containing general household goods and materials that was burned and charred, but had almost completely self-extinguished.

Firefighters quickly began to search the home and found one person who had died.

Walworth County Fire Investigation was called to assist with a fire origin and cause investigation, which is ongoing.

The Whitewater Police Department is handling the death investigation in conjunction with the Walworth County Medical Examiner.
