KAUKAUNA — The New Directions Learning Community’s service group collected 679 items recently to support the Backpack Food Assistance Program at St. Joseph Food Pantry.

NDLC is a public charter school in Kaukauna serving more than 200 students in grades 4K-4.

The Backpack Food Assistance Program provides nine Fox Valley school districts, including Kaukauna, with ready to eat food to bridge weekend hunger.

Approximately 125 students in Kaukauna receive food every Friday, according to Kristin McEneany, NDLC Community Service Group leader and community volunteer.

NDLC families donated oatmeal packets, granola bars, macaroni and cheese and cans of chicken and tuna.

Classrooms competed to see which class could collect the most items.  The winning class won a pizza party provided by Kaukauna Mayor Tony Penterman.
