KAUKAUNA — This isn’t the first time the Kaukauna High School Galloping Ghosts have turned up in a poll for the best high school mascot, but we’re honestly a little disappointed at our seeding. How can we not be favored over the Shells?

You can VOTE FOR THE GHOSTS HERE for the SBLive Sports’ NCAA Tournament-style contest to determine the best high school mascot in America.

Round 1 features the No. 4-seeded Roxana Shells (Illinois) against the No. 13-seeded Kaukauna Galloping Ghosts (Wisconsin).

Voting for this matchup will conclude Thursday, May 4, at 11:59 p.m. Eastern time.

As of Saturday afternoon, more than 11,000 votes had been cast, and Roxana held a razor thin lead over the Ghosts.

The winner advances to the second round to face either the Mount Clemens Battling Bathers (Michigan) or Lejeune Devilpups (North Carolina).

So how did Roxana get its name?

Originally named for the Shell Oil refinery that opened in town in 1918, Roxana is still called the Shells despite Phillips 66’s acquisition of the refinery in the early 2000s.

SBLive Sports describes itself as the digital destination for high school sports fans and a technology partner of state associations, coaches and administrators.
