KAUKAUNA — Kaukauna police have begun using a new device to safely test for dangerous drugs like Fentanyl that are seized on the street.

Just last week, police used the device to do a direct scan of powdered Fentanyl seized during the night shift.

The TruNarc narcotics analyzer mobile device allows officers to test substances much more safely than in the past, according to the Kaukauna Police Department.

The TruNarc uses a laser to measure the spectrum of light reflected from a substance to accurately identify it.

This method allows for officers to test substances without directly handling them, often through the packaging they are found in.

This limits the dangers of handling powder drugs like Fentanyl which can be fatal in very small amounts.

In addition to illegal narcotics, the TruNarc can identify cutting agents, precursors, and other hazardous items including explosive material.
