FREEDOM — The Freedom Fire Department, along with Freedom High School and Fox Valley Technical College, is planning an entry level firefighter class to be offered in Freedom as part of the Youth Apprentice program.

The program is open to juniors and seniors at Freedom High School, as well as those in neighboring districts, Fire Chief Mark Green said in a social media post.

Those interested are asked to contact the Freedom Fire Department by Monday, Nov. 21, 2022.

The class would be held starting the second semester of this school year and would most likely be held in the afternoons on Mon., Wed. and Fri.

Most of the classroom work and some of the light hands on work would be hosted at the Freedom Fire Department.

The remaining hands on work would be hosted at the FVTC public safety training center in Appleton.

It is possible that the sessions held at the training center could run past the end of the normal school day. A few of the training center sessions may also be scheduled on a Sat. or Sun.

What students will learn:

1. See what the fire service is all about and if the fire service is a possible career choice.

2. If not a career choice it could be a chance to join the Freedom FD or the volunteer dept. where you live.

3. This class would be no cost to students and you would gain high school credit and tech collage credit at the same time.

4. Upon completion students would be eligible for a $500 bonus from the state.

5. Many times, a potential employer looks higher on someone who is willing to serve/volunteer in the community for which they live.
