KAUKAUNA — Police arrested a suspected drunken driver Monday after they say he repeatedly bumped his vehicle into a squad car when they boxed him in at a convenience store.

According to information released by Kaukauna police late Thursday, officers were sent to the 100 block of W. 6th St. about 11 p.m. Monday for a report of a vehicle that had struck a house and a tree and fled the scene.

A description of the suspect vehicle was radioed to other officers and Officer David Knepfel located a car traveling on Lawe Street with heavy damage to it that fit the description.

The car pulled in to the Kwik Trip on Lawe Street when Knepfel got behind the car, which then struck one of the concrete posts.

As Knepfel pulled up behind the car and began to get out, the suspect car reversed suddenly and struck Knepfel’s squad car.

The suspect pulled forward again and struck the post again.

Knepfel pulled his squad car up more in hopes of preventing the car from being able to leave and the suspect again backed up striking the squad car again.

Officer Andrew Pelot arrived as this was occurring and assisted in taking the driver into custody. No one was injured during the course of the incident.

Knepfel’s squad car sustained some damage but was kept in service with a few bumps and bruises.

The driver, a 27-year-old male from Appleton, was cited for numerous traffic violations including reckless driving and 1st offense operating while intoxicated. He was booked into Outagamie County Jail on a probation violation.
