WASHINGTON ISLAND — Two kayakers last seen Saturday off Door County’s Washington Island remain missing Monday following two days of searching.
Search operations will continue until further notice, Washington Island Police Chief Gary Schultz said Sunday.
Family members have been sharing photos of the two kayakers in local Facebook groups.
According to a news release, Washington Island ambulance and Washington Island police were called out to Wickman Drive on the east side of the island about 6:40 p.m. Saturday for a report of two people that went out on a kayak without life jackets and had not returned.
Officers arrived and initiated a water search and drone operation.
The United States Coast Guard continued until 10:45 a.m. Sunday morning.
Ground and drone searches continued until 2:30 a.m. and resumed at 7 a.m. Sunday.
The missing 20-year-old man is approximately 5’11, 195 pounds, was wearing khaki shorts with brown hair.
The missing 20-year-old woman is described as 5’1”, 95 pounds with brown hair, possibly wearing a teal or red/pink swimsuit.
Search operations have continued with the assistance of the Washington Island Fire Department, Egg Harbor Fire Department, Ephraim Fire Department, Sister Bay/Liberty Grove Fire Department, Gibraltar K-9 Search Team, Jacksonport Fire Department, along with the Gibraltar Police Department, Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, Door County Sheriff’s Office, and Door County Emergency Management.
