HARRISON — Harrison Fire-Rescue crews quickly contained a fireplace fire that spread into the walls of a home on Friday evening.
No injuries to residents or pets were reported following the incident.
According to a news release, firefighters were dispatched at 6:02 p.m. on Jan. 23 after a fire grew out of control in a fireplace and began extending up a wall and across a ceiling.
A Calumet County Sheriff’s Deputy arrived on the scene before fire units and used a fire extinguisher to slow the spread of the flames.
Harrison Fire-Rescue personnel fully extinguish the fire and performed overhaul to ensure the fire had not spread further into the structure.
Department officials noted the incident serves as a reminder of the importance of regular chimney maintenance.
Creosote buildup and structural issues are common causes of dangerous chimney fires during the heating season.
The department also emphasized that working smoke alarms and accessible exit routes were vital to the safe outcome of the call.
Harrison Fire-Rescue advises residents to schedule annual chimney inspections, test smoke alarms monthly, and maintain fire extinguishers in accessible locations.
Gold Cross Ambulance and the Calumet County Sheriff’s Office assisted at the scene.
