BUCHANAN — Authorities say a man is being treated for serious injuries after he drove past ‘Road Closed’ barricades on KK and collided with a large construction trailer at a higher rate of speed.

Accordung to a news release, Fire and EMS units from Combined Locks Fire & Rescue, Town of Buchanan Fire and Rescue, paramedics from Gold Cross Ambulance and deputies from Outagamie County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched about 7:50 p.m. Friday to a crash on Cty Tk KK just east of Harwood Rd in the town of Buchanan.

That part of the road is closed for bridge construction.

Initial reports from Outagamie County Communications Center – 911 indicated that it was an automatic crash notification, and they could hear labored breathing in the background but dispatchers were not getting any response from occupants of the vehicle.

Chiefs from Buchanan and Combined Locks Responded immediately to the scene. While enroute, Chief 2901 requested ThedaStar helicopter be put on flying stand-by. A deputy had arrived on scene and advised that jaws would be necessary to free the patient from the vehicle.

Once Fire & EMS units arrived on scene, crews from both engine companies utilized both sets of rescue tools (Jaws of Life) and began a joint extrication effort to cut the vehicle apart to gain access to the patient for removal and transport. Due to the vehicle damage sustained from the crash, this was a lengthy process.

Outagamie County Dispatch advised incident command that there were no helicopters available within an hour response time, which included ThedaStar, Eagle 3 and Flight for Life.

Due to no air ambulance availability, the patient was transported to a local trauma center by ground Ambulance where he will undergo treatment for serious injuries sustained as a result of the crash.
