NEENAH — J&R Aquatic Animal Rescue, based in Neenah, says it is responding to a surge in surrendered ball pythons.

The rescue currently has 34 ball pythons in its care, according to a news release. On Friday, Jan. 2, 2025, an additional 17 ball pythons were surrendered, and the organization has already been notified that more animals are expected in the coming weeks.

Ball pythons require specialized, species-appropriate care, including regulated heat, proper bedding, lighting, and a consistent supply of frozen rodents. Feeding costs alone total hundreds of dollars each week, not including enclosure supplies, utilities, and routine veterinary oversight. The sudden influx has placed a significant strain on the rescue’s resources and available space.

“We are incredibly blessed to be able to take in so many animals and help so many people who are struggling to care for their pets,” John Moyles, Founder of J&R Aquatic Animal Rescue was quoted as saying in the news release. “That said, when intakes happen this fast and in these numbers, it really stretches our resources. Community support is what allows us to keep saying yes.”

To help manage the surge and encourage responsible placements, J&R Aquatic Animal Rescue has reduced adoption fees for ball pythons. Fancy morph ball pythons are now available for adoption for $100, while classic ball pythons are offered with name-your-price adoption fees.

The organization is also seeking donations of frozen rodents, bedding, and heating supplies. Supporters can donate supplies directly or send frozen rodents through approved vendors to help offset ongoing feeding costs.

In addition, J&R Aquatic Animal Rescue is offering to transfer adoptable ball pythons at no charge to bonafide rescue organizations and accredited educational facilities, helping to ensure responsible placements while easing capacity constraints.

J&R Aquatic Animal Rescue is a Wisconsin-based nonprofit dedicated to the rescue, rehabilitation, and rehoming of exotic pets, including reptiles, birds, fish, and small mammals. The organization provides judgment-free surrender options and works to prevent the abandonment or release of non-native species into the wild.
