ASHWAUBENON — A member of a Kaukauna knitting group with a personal connection to an Ashwaubenon grade school used their talents to bring students’ artwork to life.

Kaukauna’s Yarn It All knitting group partnered up with Trisha Vertz and Sarah Scott’s 2nd grade classes at Ashwaubenon’s Valley Elementary for a winter hat project.

The Yarn It All group meets regularly at the Kaukauna Public Library.

According to a social media post from the school, Vertz was contacted last year by her aunt, Nancy Dey, with a project idea her knitting group, “Yarn it All” wanted to do – a way to connect with schools and children.

Vertz loved the idea, and the planning began, according to the school.

In September, the students received a winter hat template to color in how they’d like.

They had no idea what was to become of the hat – they just colored it in with their favorite colors and designed them how they’d like.

The artwork was then delivered to Dey, who brought the designs to her group.

The ladies in the group took the designs and for the past couple months, met weekly at the Kaukauna Public Library to create the hats according to each design.

The entirety of the project took four months to complete.

The project came to fruition Friday when the students were given a personalized note in a card with their original winter hat design.

Then, they opened the present – they couldn’t believe how their design came to life.

The hats were perfectly matched and were beautiful and warm.

The joy coming from the students could be heard throughout the halls.
