KAUKAUNA — Jabber the parrot, who delighted visitors to the 1000 Islands Environmental Center in Kaukauna for more than 40 years, died overnight, Naturalist Brad Garrity said Friday in a social media post. WATCH
He died in the company of staff at the center, Garrity said.
“He delighted scores of school kids and was somewhat of a local celebrity, drawing many back to the center like an old friend.” Garrity said. “We know it’s a tremendous loss not only for us at 1000 Islands, but also for our community.”
For generations, Jabber has been the highlight for many visitors and staff at 1000 Islands say they often see parents who grew up visiting Jabber themselves, introduce their own children to our charismatic parrot.
Amazon parrots are long-lived and as Jabber entered his “senior” years, he needed additional vet visits and has been on multiple medications due to a heart murmur and arthritis.
