KAUKAUNA – Dr. Abbey DeBruin, a 2011 graduate of Kaukauna High School, is joining the Orthopedic & Sports Medicine Specialists in Green Bay as a sports medicine fellowship trained orthopedic surgeon.
DeBruin will be the first female orthopedic surgeon on the OSMS team and is the only female sports medicine fellowship trained orthopedic surgeon in Northeastern Wisconsin. In the US, only 6% of orthopedic surgeons are women.
She’ll begin Sept. 2.
In high school, DeBruin lettered three years in basketball and was a first-team all-conference selection and honorable mention all-state.
She also played volleyball, leading the team to a state runner-up.
She was a biology/physiology major at Northern Michigan University and was a forward for the Wildcat basketball team for three seasons.
DeBruin completed both her medical degree and residency at the University of Wisconsin – Madison. Following her time in Madison, DeBruin went on to complete her Sports Medicine Fellowship at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, Virginia.
At the University of Virginia, DeBruin was the team doctor for both the University of Virginia and James Madison University.
Caring for patients of all ages, DeBruin sees and treats ACL tears, multi-ligament knee injuries, meniscus tears, patellofemoral instability, AC joint separations, shoulder instability, and more, according to a news release.
Procedures DeBruin performs include, but are not limited to, tibial tubercle and femur/tibia osteotomies, rotator cuff repairs, arthroscopic labral repairs, partial and total knee replacements, and anatomic and reverse shoulder replacements. Debruin also performs the MISHA procedure, which is a joint sparing treatment option for mild to moderate knee arthritis.
