KAUKAUNA — A family and their pet got out safely early Monday as fire caused major damage to their home near downtown Kaukauna.
According to a news release, the Kaukauna Fire Department responded at 02:14 a.m. Monday to a fire at 105 W 5th Street. Firefighters arrived on scene within 4 minutes of being notified.
When they arrived, firefighters found smoke coming from the upper floor, multiple soffit vents and the roof of the two-story residential home.
Crew members and police verified that all occupants were out of the house, including the family dog that was evacuated by the owner.
An aggressive fire attack was performed by the first arriving firefighters. The fire, which originated in the upstairs office, had extended through a wall and ceiling into the second-floor attic space. While firefighters quickly extinguished the fire in the room of origin, fire had already spread into the attic space.
Access to the attic proved challenging due to the age and construction style of the home, according to the fire department.
Firefighters remained on scene for just over three hours until the fire was fully extinguished. Many of the belongings in the home were tarped by the fire department personnel to salvage as much property as possible.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
Total damage to the structure is estimated to be $150,000.
The Little Chute Fire Department, the Combined Locks Fire Department, and the Kaukauna Police Department assisted.
