WILLIAMS BAY — The long awaited reopening of Daddy Maxwell’s Restaurant in downtown Williams Bay has arrived.

The quirky, igloo-shaped building has been closed since 2021 and the new owners have been working for months to get it ready for customers once again.

Located on the quiet side of Geneva Lake, a few miles from the more well-known Chicago getaway city of Lake Geneva, the road-trip worthy diner has been brought back to life.

In a post on it’s Facebook page, the restaurant said they had opened Friday morning at 6 a.m.

(MENU)

Hours for now are Friday 6 a.m.-2 p.m., Sat. 6 a.m.-2 p.m. and Sun 6 a.m. -1 p.m.

The first few days will be cash only as owners wait for their credit card machine to arrive. The fish fry will be coming soon.

History:

  • Arctic Circle Diner: The Stein family began building the igloo-shaped diner in 1947, and it opened in 1949. The name was a reference to Wisconsin’s cold winters, and the diner was popular with teenagers for over a decade.
  • Al and Ethel Weiss: The diner was sold to Al and Ethel Weiss in the 1960s, when Al was the police chief.
  • Daddy (Marshall) and Jeanette Maxwell: Marshall and Jeanette Maxwell bought the diner in 1987 and renamed it Daddy Maxwell’s Antarctic Circle Diner. Jeanette was a well-known figure in the Williams Bay community, known for her cooking and baking. She was also a volunteer for many local organizations and charities. Jeanette was the sole owner for a few years before her death.
