MADISON — Student government vice president Jim Mallon with Wisconsin Gov. Lee Dreyfus as the governor is about to get a pie in the face during a fundraiser April 6, 1979 on campus.
Kaukauna Community News co-founder Dan Plutchak covered the event for the Daily Cardinal student news paper while attending the University of Wisconsin.
Among the pie-tossers were Mallon, Pail and Shovel President Leon Varjon and frequent group contributor Stu Levitan.
Dreyfus agreed to be a willing target of a banana cream pie to raise money for the Wisconsin Student Association fund to rebuild the mock Statue of Liberty on frozen Lake Mendota.
But after Dreyfus did his part, some protesters shouting anti-nuclear slogans sent eggs flying in his direction.
Then a group followed the governor to his car, parked two blocks away, and banged on the vehicle as he left. Dreyfus has supported use of nuclear power in Wisconsin.
