KAUKAUNA — Kaukauna-based Saving Snouts pig sanctuary and the Door County Sheriff’s Office are sharing differing accounts online about the shooting death by a deputy of a pig that had evaded capture.

The pig had been seen roaming in the area of Highways 42/5 last week in the southern part of Door County.

Despite several attempts by many people, authorities say they were unsuccessful in capturing the pig until it was cornered on Friday evening.

Sheriff Tammy Sternard said authorities were concerned because the approximately 300-lb. pig had been walking into traffic on two major highways.

Because of the pig’s proximity to the highway, and the potential danger the large, loose pig posed to motorists and others on the roadway, a Door County Sheriff’s Deputy shot and killed the pig.

But a post from Saving Snouts said they had a trailer on the way and that they were led to believe the pig would be tranquilized.

The deputy wanted confirmation a trailer could be there and the rescue assured him one would be there within 20 minutes, according to the Saving Snouts post.

But a short time later, they say, the deputy went up to the pig and shot her.
