KAUKAUNA — Kaukauna homeowners and their five children are being helped by the Red Cross after returning home to find smoke detectors going off.

According to a news release, the Kaukauna Fire Department responded about 1:40 p.m. Tuesday to a report of a house fire at 317 Park Street across from La Follette Park.

Arriving within 3 minutes, firefighters found smoke coming from the west side of the home through a broken window.

The homeowner told firefighters that no residents or pets were in the home.

When firefighters entered the home through a door on the west side, they immediately encountered the fire and extinguished it.

The initial fire knockdown was completed within four minutes of arrival.

Following an investigation, the cause of the fire is believed to be electrical in nature.

Damage is estimated to be $65,000.

The Red Cross is assisting the homeowners and their five children, according to the news release.

Little Chute Fire Department, Kaukauna Police Department, Kaukauna Utilities, and We Energies for assisting.

Authorities say the resident was alerted to the fire by working smoke detectors before entering her residence upon returning.

These devices can also alert passersby and neighbors, leading to a quicker response from the fire department and potentially saving lives and preventing significant property damage.
