BUCHANAN — This weekend is the 43rd annual National Fallen Firefighters Foundation Memorial Weekend, and there are many ways that residents and departments are honoring the fallen.
Many are lighting the front of their houses (or stations) with red lights, many stations will ring bells/sirens at noon on Sunday, May 5, or residents can lower their flags in remembrance.
The Town of Buchanan Fire Department will be lighting their station and trucks with red lights Saturday May 4, (International Firefighter Day), from 6:30 pm-9 pm.
The department will honor the 89 firefighters that died in the line of duty in 2023 and the 137 that died in previous years.
In Appleton, all six stations will display red exterior lights through May 19 in honor of Appleton firefighter Mitch Lundgaard who was killed in the line of duty.
If you are interested in virtually viewing Memorial Weekend Events, go to the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation website. On that page, there is a link to a webcam where you can watch the Memorial Service on May 5, 2024 at 10 am.
You can get more information on that website with times and tributes. You can also sign a virtual remembrance banner or sign up to light your house as well.
