TOWN OF WAUSAUKEE — A Kaukauna man drowned Saturday while swimming in a Marinette County lake, according to the Marinette County Sheriff’s office.

Authorities say John Van Rossum, 47, Kaukauna, was swimming in Butterfly Lake when he called out for help and went under.

Marinette County Dispatch received the about the possible drowning about 4 p.m.

Fire, rescue, and sheriff’s deputies responded to the lake, which is located in the Town of Wausaukee, Marinette County.

The first deputy to arrive on the scene entered the water and was able to assist others in recovering Van Rossum and immediately administered CPR until rescue arrived.

Van Rossum was transported to Aurora Medical Center – Bay Area in Marinette, where he was later pronounced dead.

The Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Wausaukee Fire Department, Wausaukee Rescue, and Aurora Bay Area Medical Center Paramedics. The Middle Inlet Fire Department Dive Team had also been called out but were canceled prior to arrival.
