KAUKAUNA — Maybe the woodchuck was looking for something sweet for dessert?

In any case, visitors to Sweet Treats Candies and Sweets on Second Street in downtown Kaukauna were joined by an unusual guest last week.

Dubbed “Walter the Woodchuck” in a social media post from Sweet Treats, the wayward woodchuck had somehow made its way to the front entrance of the store where it cowered in the corner behind a chair.

The woodchuck stayed in place overnight until Kaukauna Police Officer Charlie Vosters captured the animal and returned it safely to the wild nearby.

Vosters has become the go-to animal rescue specialist on the force this summer.

In addition to rescuing ducklings from storm grates — a rather common occurrence in recent years — Voster also rescue a fawn earlier this month.

As for the woodchuck, more commonly known as a groundhog, hopefully this will be a one-time incident and not a repeat event like the move of the same name.
