MADISON — Wisconsin voters on Tuesday decided they want a change of direction in their state Supreme Court.

Milwaukee County Circuit Judge Janet Protasiewicz defeated former Wisconsin Supreme Court Justice Dan Kelly in the most expensive state Supreme Court race in U.S. history.

The race was called Tuesday evening by the Associated Press.

Although the race is officially non-partisan, candidates have been increasingly supported and promoted by Republicans or Democrats and have shared either left-leaning or right leaning views.

The current court is considered to have a 4-3 conservative majority. With Justice Patience Roggensack—a member of the court’s conservative majority—retiring, this election determines the ideological control of the court.

Protasiewicz ran as a liberal candidate. Kelly ran as a conservative candidate.
