KAUKAUNA — Kaukauna police say they’ve used Narcan in two overdose cases this week as fentanyl continues to be the No. 1 drug threat in the Fox Valley.

“Kaukauna is certainly not immune to this dangerous drug,” read a Facebook post Wednesday from the police department.

The two overdose cases in Kaukauna come in the wake of a recent news release from the Lake Winnebago Area Metropolitan Enforcement Group – Drug Unit that reported a dramatic spike of more than 4,000 percent more fentanyl seized during 2022 compared to a year earlier.

LWAM is a multijurisdictional task force comprised of investigators from 15 participating law enforcement agencies within Winnebago, Outagamie, Fond du Lac and Calumet Counties.

While dangerous drugs such as methamphetamine and heroin continue to threaten communities, fentanyl has rapidly become the number one drug threat to the Fox Valley area, according to LWAM.

The spike is largely attributed to the December 2022 seizure of approximately 12 pounds of counterfeit prescription pills containing fentanyl, the largest individual fentanyl seizure in LWAM history.

But even without that seizure, LWAM seized approximately 560 percent more fentanyl in 2022 than 2021.
