DOOR COUNTY — Gills Rock, at the tip of Wisconsin’s Door County, can be an inhospitable place even in the middle of summer.

But when temperatures plunged and the wind began to howl last week just before Christmas, the scene looked as beautiful as it was terrifying.

Visitors to Gills Rock will recognize the quaint Simply Scandinavian gift shop, one of several shops along the waterfront. But after the big storm, the shop posted photos of its ice encased store, and they quickly went viral.

The photos were taken by owner Gretel Sannikas, according to the shop’s Facebook page.

TV stations from Milwaukee to Chicago showed the spectacular scene this week on their newscasts.

Now people are flocking to see it before the ice melts. Temps hit 36 degrees Wednesday and are expected to be above freezing for the next week or so.
