KAUKAUNA — Some students in Kaukauna had a special visitor Thursday on the first day of classes for the 2022-’23 school year.

Gov. Tony Evers and State Superintendent of Public Schools Dr. Jill Underly visited with students at Electa Quinney Elementary School to kick off the school year.

“A great big thank you to the students and staff @quinneycougars in the @kaukaunasd for the warm welcome they gave @DrJillUnderly and @GovEvers this morning! #BackToSchoolWI,” read a Tweet from the Wisconsin Department of Education.

Earlier in the day, Evers today shared a video message welcoming students, educators, and parents back to school for the 2022-23 school year.

The governor’s visit to Kaukauna begins a statewide back-to-school tour, visiting schools and meeting with students, families, educators, and staff as they begin the 2022-23 school year.

On Tuesday, to kick off the tour, the governor announced a $90 million investment into K-12 education across the state. The money comes from the federal American Rescue Plan Act and will be distributed to public school districts and independent charter schools on a per-student basis.

Kaukauna’s share is about $425,000 to be used to retain and recruit teachers and staff, address rising costs for supplies and services, defray the cost of school bussing or provide direct support for students in the classroom.

The governor’s back-to-school video message can be seen here.
