FOX CROSSING — A black bear was spotted by residents Monday afternoon in the village of Fox Crossing near Menasha, but police were never able to track it down.

The bear was photographed near Susan Ave, as well as in O’hauser Park, according to the Fox Crossing Police Department.

There has been an increase in bear movements throughout Wisconsin this time of year, and although it is rare to see them in Fox Crossing, it appears at least one has found its way to the Fox Valley.

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources has these tips to help if you are encounter a bear, as well as ways to avoid attracting them: https://dnr.wisconsin.gov/newsroom/release/59351

Black bears are naturally cautious animals that normally avoid contact with people for their safety, but conflicts between people and bears can arise. Additionally, bears can quickly learn to associate humans with food when food sources are available.

Just a week ago, a young bear broke into a cabin near Crivitz looking for food. A DNR warden was called in to use a catch pole to remove the intruder.

Earlier in May, a Medford, Wisconsin, couple was attacked by a bear while they were inside their home.
