FINAL: The Appleton East girls’ basketball team fell to Kettle Moraine 69-53 Saturday in the WIAA Division 1 championship game.

ASHWAUBENON — The Appleton East girls’ basketball team will play for a state title after defeating Brookfield East 44-40 Friday evening in a WIAA Division 1 state semifinal game.

The Patriots lead by as many as 11 points in the second half, but Brookfield closed to 41-40 with 3:15 left, but could get no closer.

Emily LaChapell led all scorers with 20.

Appleton East, the No. 3 seed, will face top-seed Kettle Moraine Saturday evening for the state title. Kettle Moraine defeated De Pere 66-47 in Friday’s other semifinal.

Kettle Moraine received the bracket’s top seed in its first appearance in the State Tournament since 2004. It is the seventh time the Lasers have qualified overall, all coming during a nine-year span from 1996-2004. They won their only title in 1999.

This will be the third overall appearance at state for Appleton East and the program’s first since 1998.

The Patriots’ first two trips to state resulted in losses in the quarterfinals in both 1990 and 1998.

They finished runner-up in the Fox Valley Association this season.

All games will be broadcast live on WCWF W-14 in Green Bay and the Fox Valley or on the Magic of March app.
