UPDATE: The Appleton East girls’ basketball team will play for a state title Saturday evening after defeating Brookfield East 44-40 in a WIAA Division 1 state semifinal game.

APPLETON — Coming into the post-season as the second seed in their bracket, the Appleton East girls’ basketball team had plenty of confidence that they would make it to state.

Now, the Patriots hope to keep their momentum going Friday in their WIAA Division 1 semifinal game against Brookfield East at the Resch Center in Green Bay.

The 46th Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association Girls Basketball State Tournament will take place Thursday-Saturday, March 10-12, at the Resch Center in Ashwaubenon.

To get to the tournament, East had a little help along the way.

Conference foe and No. 4 seed Neenah defeated No. 1 seed Hortonville in the sectional semifinal, before falling to East in the sectional final.

This will be the third overall appearance at State for third-seeded Appleton East and the program’s first since 1998.

The Patriots’ first two experiences resulted in losses in the quarterfinals in both 1990 and 1998.

They finished runner-up in the Fox Valley Association this season.

The Patriots’ semifinal game comes Friday night against two-seed Brookfield East.

Brookfield East is making it first appearance since 2004 and their sixth overall. The Spartans’ most notable experience was finishing runner-up in 1984.

They qualify this season with a 48-40 win over Arrowhead in the sectional final held at Sun Prairie.

All games will be broadcast live on WCWF W-14 in Green Bay and the Fox Valley or on the Magic of March app.
