MADISON — As the number of hospital beds available in the Fox River Valley and statewide continues to dwindle, state officials are warning of an impending crisis.
During a media briefing Wednesday, Gov. Tony Evers said he is asking the Biden Administration to send 100 federal health care workers to help to combat staffing shortages and a surge of COVID-19 cases.
According to the latest figures Wednesday from the Wisconsin Department of Health Services, the case level in Outagamie County for the past two weeks remains unchanged and is considered critically high.
Over the past seven days, the average number of cases has been 129, which is considered critically high for the size of the county.
Hospital capacity in the Fox River Valley remains strained as well, with more than two thirds of hospitals at peak capacity.
97.6 percent of all hospital beds currently are in use, according to the DHS, and 98.2 of all ICU beds are in use.
The number of COVID-19 patients in area hospitals jumped from 73 on Nov. 2 to 115 on Tuesday, according to the DHS.
Patients in the ICU have gone up from 10 on Nov. 10 to 23 on Tuesday.
Much of the surge is coming from those who are not vaccinated.
According to the DHS, unvaccinated people are diagnosed with COVID-19 at a rate five times higher that those vaccinated, and they are hospitalized at a rate 11 times higher.
Currenlty 65 percent of Outagamie County residents eligible to be vaccinated have received at least one dose.
