KAUKAUNA — A strong geomagnetic storm watch is in effect for this weekend, and clearing skies mean you may be able to spot the northern lights over Wisconsin.
According to the Space Weather Prediction Center, a significant solar flare occurred Thursday, and is forecast to arrive at Earth on Saturday, with effects likely continuing into Sunday.
The forecast is mostly clear overnight Saturday.
A solar storm of this strength has the potential to drive the aurora further away from its normal polar residence and if other factors come together, the aurora might be seen over the far Northeast, to the upper Midwest, and over the state of Washington.
The best viewing will be away from city lights. Tips for photographing the northern lights can be found HERE.
